In the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, the Delhi Capitals defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by a thrilling 25-run margin in match 7.
Bangalore chose to field first after winning the toss, and the match took place at the storied M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. When the Delhi Caps came to bat, they played some excellent batting. Before skipper Meg Lanning was removed from the game, a solid 28 runs were scored in the first five overs in the first phase. After that, Alice Capsey and Shafali Verma forged a strong partnership and scored 82 runs for the second wicket. Following Shafali’s fifty years of age, Jemimah Rodrigues and Capsey, who were barely fifty, retired.
Marizanne Kapp and Jess Jonassen each contributed 32 and 36 runs in a fast 16-ball inning, respectively, in the later portion of the inning. The Delhi Capitals reached a formidable 194 thanks to their significant efforts and a couple of powerful strikes from Arundhati Reddy. Bangalore’s two wicket scorers were Nadine de Klerk and S. Devine.
With openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine collecting a respectable 77 runs for the first wicket, the Challengers, chasing the goal, got off to a great start. Mandhana continued her outstanding effort, adding 35 more runs with Sabbhineni Meghana, despite Devine leaving the game after reaching 23. The highlight was undoubtedly Mandhana’s outstanding 74 off 43 balls, which included 10 fours and three sixes.
Mandhana made a fantastic contribution, but after she was removed, RCB struggled and lost by 25 runs, ending their chase at 169. With three wickets, Jess Jonassen was the standout bowler for DC, followed by Arundhati Reddy and Marizanne Kapp, who each claimed two.
Moving forward, the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore are scheduled to play at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on March 2. However, DC Women will be preparing for their upcoming game against the Gujarat Giants, which is scheduled for March 3rd at the same location in Bangalore.
