Will Smeed, an English batter, has joined the Pretoria Capitals for the third SA20 tournament. Smeed, who is only 22 years old, has made a lot of noise in franchise cricket, which has helped him get a spot in the next SA20 tournament. The cricket player from Cambridge initially gained notoriety in 2022 when he struck a century for Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.
Since then, among other teams, he has played for the Quetta Gladiators in the PSL, the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the CPL, the Deccan Gladitiators in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, and MI Emirates in the ILT20. Although he is currently a member of Birmingham’s team for The Hundred, the young player has not yet been included in the starting lineup.
Throughout his career, Will Smeed has played in 98 Twenty20 matches and amassed 2484 runs at a 152.57 strike rate.
In nine Vitality Blast games, he scored 246 runs for Somerset, his previous team. The young player is not even considered and has not yet made his debut for the national squad. After the Champions Trophy in 2025, he might be able to join England’s white-ball team with a strong South African campaign.
Jonathan Trott has also been hired by the Capitals to serve as their head coach for the upcoming campaign. The former cricketer for England is also in charge of the Afghanistan national squad, which has performed incredibly well recently under his direction. Afghanistan nearly made it to the ODI World Cup 2023 semifinals, and they overcame Australia in 2024 to secure a spot in the top four.

Since his contract with Afghanistan is slated to expire in 2024, his current move to the Capitals raises more concerns about his future there. Although there are rumours that he would also be the Delhi Capitals’ future head coach, the team is still leaning towards selecting someone Indian who can serve in that capacity all season.
