India A captain Shubman Gill is wearing a taped-up jersey in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2024 play against India B at M Chinnswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. It has been understood that the batsman didn’t have access to his customary ‘77’ jersey, which is why he decided to play with a taped-up shirt.
Alternatively, he might have borrowed a teammate’s shirt and chosen to tape up the number to avoid misunderstanding. Notably, the youngster has a special love for number seven as he sported that number in the U19 World Cup. Later, he intended to sport number seven at senior-level cricket as well but as it was unavailable, he settled for number 77.
Meanwhile, Shubman Gill captaincy is also under the examination in the Duleep Trophy.
India A started wonderfully with the ball as the Abhimanyu Easwaran-led side was reduced to 94/7. However, since then, Musheer Khan and Navdeep Saini grabbed charge of the situation and constructed a valuable alliance that saved India B out of difficulty.
Akash Deep, Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed, who were superb in the first two sessions on Day 1, appeared uninspired in the last session and it placed pressure on India A. Kuldeep Yadav too failed to impress. Meanwhile, Gill, who took a fantastic catch to eliminate Rishabh Pant on Day 1, appeared lost for a long spell. Musheer and Navdeep never seemed in trouble, and following this, Gil’s captaincy has been questioned.
The bowlers also didn’t try enough short balls against the batters. Now that India B is clearly in control of the game, Gill will need to step up and inspire his bowlers to get going and finish India B early.
