After putting Bangladesh in a position to win the first test match against India at Chattogram by scoring 513 runs, India was forced to put in a lot of effort in order to reach their goal. Following a lacklustre opening session, veteran left-arm spinner Axar Patel lifted the ante with a triple strike precisely when it mattered. As a result, Indian bowlers compensated and brought Bangladesh’s score down to 272 for 6, moving closer and closer to a decisive victory. It was always going to be an uphill task to save the test match by batting out for nearly 180 overs in two days and also chasing a target of 513, but the debutant Zakir Hasan displayed a lot of character by scoring a patient hundred off of 224 balls. Despite this, saving the test match was not possible. Axar (27-10-50-3), who made his Test debut in a dream match against England at home in 2021, may have had his best performance in a short career in the longest format. This is especially true when taking into consideration the fact that the fourth day wicket did not offer much assistance to spinners. Ravichandran Ashwin (27-2-76.1), who wasn’t at his best during this match, is sure to be relieved to see the end of Zakir, who was caught by a diving Virat Kohli at first slip. Ashwin’s line for the game is 27-2-76.1. The defensive prod made by the batter got an inside edge onto the pads, which bounced the ball up for Kohli to dive in front of.
Kuldeep Yadav (18-2-69-1) also did his part by coaxing a fidgety Litton Das to try and loft him over mid-on. However, the batter was unable to check his half-scoop and half-drive, which presented Umesh Yadav with an opportunity to make an easy catch.
In spite of this, young Zakir deserves all the praise in the world for his impressive composure during his debut test match, during which he played a defensive game while also hitting those boundaries (a total of 13 in all, along with a six during his innings).
Up until the southpaw was dismissed, none of the Indian bowlers were able to threaten Zakir, with the exception of Umesh Yadav during his post-lunch spell with old Kookaburra.
