The cricketer from Mizoram, Agni Chopra, has been in the news lately for his outstanding performance in his Ranji Trophy debut against Sikkim. His brilliant performance in the first inning won him a lot of plaudits from the domestic cricket community, and his sound batting style was the topic of conversation. In contrast, the left-handed batter’s Bollywood association is quite recent.
With his father, well-known Bollywood filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra, receiving a lot of attention for the film “12th Fail,” the southpaw is not the only one in the family making noteworthy contributions. Despite receiving little notice when it debuted in theaters in November 2023, the picture has generated a lot of buzz since its recent release on Netflix, particularly because of Vidhu Vinod Chopra direction. The B’town icon is notable for having authored several films, including “Ferrari Ki Sawari,” “3 Idiots,” and “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.”
Returning to Agni Chopra, the hitter from Michigan has made a first-class impression and has performed admirably.
He entered the batting at number three in Mizoram’s Ranji (Plate League) match against Sikkim, with the opposition at 442/9d and Mizoram behind by a wicket. Sikkim attempted to quickly exert pressure on Day 2 by taking early wickets, but Agni had other ideas.
The 25-year-old’s 166 off 179 balls kept the scoreboard ticking over quickly without any assistance from the other end. He forced a counterattacking inning with 19 boundaries and seven towering maximums during this inning. His blow eventually proved fruitless, as the squad was hustled out for 214, with seven batters dismissed without even opening their accounts.
Agni ‘fires’ as Mizoram continues on
Afterwards, Mizoram needed to recover more quickly because they were still 228 runs behind Sikkim. However, this time around, an early breakthrough allowed the first-inning centurion to reach the crease on the third delivery of the inning. Picking up where he left off, Agni continued to score runs from one end while assisting with the ship’s resailing. Chopra hit a brilliant 92 runs in just 74 balls, complete with a maximum and 11 fours.
Although Mizoram was still lagging behind by 78 runs, he did not reach his well-earned century. With his 126 off 124 balls, lower-middle-order batsman Mohit Jangra helped raise the total to 397 before the side was eventually all out, setting a target of 170 for the fourth inning. Chopra’s heroic efforts were fruitless on Day 4, as Sikkim crossed the boundary. However, he has undoubtedly made his strongest case to announce his presence in first-class cricket.
