Sourav Ganguly’s security has allegedly been upgraded to the “Z” category by the West Bengal government. The choice was made on Tuesday, May 16, after Ganguly’s time as Y category security officer was up.
The former head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) used to have three Special Branch police officers on his property and the same number of law enforcement officers watching over his Behala home under the Y category security cover. Between eight and ten police officers would be keeping an eye on him under the new security plan.
The Hindu reported a senior official as saying, “When the VVIP’s security cover ran out, the protocol called for a review, and it was decided to raise Sourav Ganguly security cordon to the Z category.”
The official said that on Tuesday, May 16, people from the state government went to Sourav Ganguly office in Behala and met with officers from the local police station and the Kolkata Police Headquarters in Lalbazar. He also said that Ganguly is now traveling with his Indian Premier League (IPL) team and will return to Kolkata on May 21. From that day on, he will have Z-category security.
Sourav Ganguly is currently on the road with his team, the Delhi Daredevils. They will return to Kolkata on May 21. Right away, he will start getting Z category protection,” the official said.
Sourav Ganguly is the Director of Cricket for the IPL team Delhi Capitals (DC) at the moment. Notably, it was his first professional cricket job after he finished his term as head of the BCCI in October 2022. During the 2019 IPL season, he was an assistant for DC and worked closely with coach Ricky Ponting.
DC’s season in the IPL 2023 has been terrible. The team led by David Warner has only eight points and is at the bottom of the IPL 2023 points table. After losing to the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their last game, they were no longer in the running to make the playoffs. On May 17, DC and PBKS will play against each other again at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala.
