Australia humiliated India in the World Test Championship final at the Oval, losing by a score of 209 runs. Since then, Indian supporters have been in a state of profound sorrow as they continue to wait for another ICC trophy. While experts commented on the team’s performance, Gautam Gambhir addressed a number of issues he believes are pervasive in Indian cricket.
According to the two-time IPL-winning captain, the PR teams of some individual cricketers have made them appear greater than the team. Although Gambhir did not identify the players specifically, fans believe they are MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli. Gambhir has a history of delivering bombshells, and his most recent revelation was no exception.
“He always says I won the World Cup, but I believe it was Yuvraj Singh who led us to the finals of the 2011 and 2007 World Cups. I believe he was the tournament’s most valuable player in both competitions,” Gambhir told News18.
“I am not positive. It is regrettable, however, that Yuvraj Singh’s name is not mentioned when discussing the 2007 and 2011 World Cups. Why then? It’s only marketing and public relations that portray one person as the greatest and everyone else as inferior. “Our country is not a team-obsessed country; rather, it is an individual-obsessed country,” Gambhir continued. “This is the truth, and I believe it should be broadcast to the world.”
Gautam Gambhir also cited England, New Zealand, and Australia as teams that prioritise the group over the individual. He criticised the PR firms of the cricketers and the broadcasters for making the individual cricketers appear larger than the team as a whole, citing this as one of the primary reasons India has not won an ICC championship since 2013.
“In England, Australia, and New Zealand, the team is more important than the individual. Everyone involved in Indian cricket, including the broadcaster and the media, has been reduced to a public relations firm. If broadcasters refuse to give you credit, you will forever be underrated. This is the greatest reality. Because we are so focused on individuals, it has been so long since we’ve won an ICC tournament,” the 41-year-old said.
Did you know that Mohinder Amarnath ji was the Man of the Match in the final of the 1983 World Cup? Gambhir Gambhir believes that individual worship dates back to the 1983 World Cup. Captain Kapil Dev was hailed as a master tactician for his ability to lead his soldiers to victory. However, Gambhir emphasised Mohinder Amarnath’s significant contribution to the tournament.
“Have you only seen Kapil Dev ji hoist the trophy? Mohinder Amarnath ji was named Man of the Match in both the semi-final and the championship match. Did anyone realise that Mohinder Amarnath Ji was the match’s MVP? (Audience responds no.) That is the issue. Up until now, only one photograph from the 1983 World Cup has been displayed: one of Kapil Devji lifting the trophy. Show Mohinder Amarnath ji some respect occasionally!” he concluded.
