The IPL 2023 season for the Rajasthan Royals seems to be over after last year’s champions, Royal Challengers Bangalore, beat them in their own stadium. The home team lost because their hitting was so bad that they gave up without a fight in the chase. Kumar Sangakkara, the head coach of RR, didn’t hold back when he talked about how bad their loss was.
Chasing a total of 171 runs, the Rajasthan Royals lost their two starters before they could score a single run. During the power play, the losses kept coming, and they lost half of their team without making a big score. Kumar Sangakkara, a former Sri Lankan cricketer, thought that the hitters lost their wickets instead of the bowlers getting rid of them.
“I think we got a little too excited during the power play. We thought we had to score too many runs and be too positive. We were trying to work together, but when we came out of the power play, we were already five goals behind, which was probably the end of the game.
They didn’t really help us get out, but we did it ourselves, which was pretty clear. So, it wasn’t just about one person. It was about the whole hitting unit, and we weren’t good enough today,” he told the press after the game.
We have to play for pride and make sure we win. Kumar Sangakkara
RCB captain and IPL 2023 Orange Cap holder Faf du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell’s fiery efforts set the stage for a competitive score early in the game. At the half-way point, the game was still close because the home team had the batsmen to chase down the goal. But their hitters didn’t show up, and they chose some strange shots, which hurt RR’s chances of making the playoffs.
“It was a bad day at the plate. We bowled well enough to keep them under 170, which was a good target on this pitch. We’ll have to wait, since we still have one game to play. Other teams’ results will have to go our way, so we’ll have to play for pride and make sure we win,” the coach said.
