The batsman for India, Virat Kohli, has revealed the reasons why he felt the need to take a vacation, including how he was struggling mentally and how he was attempting to “fake” his intensity on the field.
The star batsman for India, Virat Kohli, has not reached the international century mark in more than a thousand days, and the speculation over his current form continues to increase with each passing minute. The hitter was unable to score even fifty runs while on tour in England, which led to him being benched for the limited-overs series against the West Indies and Zimbabwe.
And now, in an interview with the media outlet Star Sports, Kohli has revealed the reasons why he felt he needed to take a vacation, as well as how he was attempting to fake his intensity.
“For the first time in the past ten years, I went an entire month without picking up the bat. I recently came to the realisation that I had been kind of trying to fake my intensity a bit. You know that you can do that because you are competitive and you are saying, “I have the intensity,” but your body is telling you to stop, and it is asking you to take a breather and step back.
People have the impression that I am a guy who possesses a lot of mental toughness, which is true. Everyone has a limit, and it’s important to be aware of yours because, if you don’t, things might quickly become harmful for you “Kohli stated.
“This time in my life taught me a great deal, including many things that I had previously repressed and hidden from view. When it came to light, I immediately accepted it. We don’t talk about it because we are hesitant, and we don’t want to be seen as mentally weak or weak individuals. I am not embarrassed to admit that I was feeling mentally down; it is a normal thing to feel. However, we don’t talk about it because we are hesitant.
Believe me when I say that pretending to be strong is a much worse option than being honest about feeling weak “he continued.
Kohli continued by saying the following about his level of intensity: “I am the type of person who wakes up with the thought, “let’s see what the day has for me,” and then makes it a point to participate in everything that I do throughout the day with complete presence, enthusiastic involvement, and a positive attitude.
That has always been who I am, and people frequently ask me how I manage to maintain the same level of passion and composure on the field despite the challenges I face there. I simply let them know that I adore competing in the game, that I take great pride in the fact that I have a lot to offer, and that I would give my all at every position on the field.”
“To me, there was nothing out of the ordinary about it, and many people, both inside and outside of the team, have asked me how I am able to keep up with everything. I will just say one simple thing: I want to win for my team at any cost, and if that means that I will be out of breath when I leave the field, then so be it. My only goal is to help my team win. To be able to play at that level, I have to put in the kind of preparation that you just saw.
That did not occur naturally, and I had to force myself to make it happen. However, I just was not aware of it, “he added.
When Kohli is next seen in action, it will be in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022, and the first match he will play in will be against Pakistan in a Group A match that will take place in Dubai on Sunday.
