Sports fans in the USA have shown extraordinary interest in cricket and have demonstrated great engagement during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
The first round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which the USA and the West Indies co-hosted, drew an astounding number of spectators. 190,000 spectators watched matches in the USA alone, captivating the nation and laying the groundwork for cricket’s further expansion in North America.
Over 22,000 spectators attended the four matches in Grand Prairie, Texas, demonstrating the strong support for the team. Not to be overlooked were the large numbers of Nepalese supporters and US fans who witnessed the historic upset of Pakistan by the USA.
The largest venue of the World Cup, Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, lived up to its reputation. When India played Pakistan, it drew the largest crowd in USA history for international cricket (34,028), and it concluded with a real celebration of cricket between India and the USA (31,722). Nearly 165,000 spectators saw the World Cup games in New York overall.
After three washouts and several days of record-breaking rain, Pakistan played Ireland in front of more than 4,000 jubilant spectators in Broward County, Florida, the epicentre of the U.S. phase of the tournament.
Unofficial watch parties were observed across the nation, and tens of thousands more fans visited the fan parks located at Cedar Creek in Nassau County, Citi Field and the World Trade Centre in NYC, Epic Central in Grand Prairie, and Fisher Pavilion in Seattle.
Fantastic numbers of American fans are using the ICC’s facilities to interact digitally with the World Cup. 2.7 million users from the USA have already been registered on the ICC website and app, which is 370% more than the total number of viewers for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Of those viewers, 52% are new users to the ICC platforms.
The amount of time spent on the ICC website and app has doubled compared to 2022, and 71% of users find the site through organic searches, indicating a growing interest in the sport.
Furthermore, nearly 10 million young fans in the USA have joined the ICC Mascots Blaze and Tonk in the Roblox fan zones for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Through engaging stadium experiences, interactive games with a cricket theme, and much more, the fan zones are an entertaining way to introduce cricket to new fans.
“We are absolutely delighted with how the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup has gone in the USA and the unprecedented level of interest in cricket in the country,” stated Chris Tetley, Head of Events for the ICC. It’s amazing to see 190,000 fans having a great time in stadiums around the United States, and the World Cup has raised interest in the sport, as evidenced by the traffic on the ICC website and app.
“The event received extraordinary coverage from American mainstream media, ranging from Good Morning America to the front page of the New York Times. This is encouraging for our long-term strategy in the United States.”
“We are thrilled with the reception the World Cup has received on our first foray into the largest sports market in the world, and we will look to build on this over the next four years towards the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 and beyond,” the statement reads. “The USA is a priority area of the global growth strategy.”
