Unburdened of the “Mr. Fix It” Mantle, Steve Smith Aims for a Twenty20 World Cup Spot

If he keeps performing in the same manner, the experienced batsman Steve Smith is optimistic that he will be able to contribute to Australia’s successful defence of their Twenty20 World Cup title later this year when it is hosted in Australia. The tournament will take place in the fall of this year.

In Twenty20 cricket, Smith was used as a sheet anchor, especially during Australia’s successful campaign to win the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates a year ago.

Nevertheless, while the squad was on tour in Sri Lanka in June, the team management released the 33-year-old player from his role as “Mr. Fix It” and gave him permission to play without restrictions. He scored a century on that tour.

On Tuesday, Smith was quoted as stating something along the lines of, “I feel like when I’m playing terrific T20 cricket, I’m in that team (T20 World Cup), for sure,” according to cricket.com

“The position of ‘Mr. Fix It’ that I’ve been given over the past couple of years has been stripped away from me today,” the speaker said. The right-hander believes that he is currently at the point where he can play his natural style without any fear in the shortest format.

“For the Sri Lanka trip, and I felt like I could go out and just play with a lot more freedom and organically and without having any kind of hesitation in the back of my mind, I felt like I could go out and just play with the Sri Lanka tour.

Smith went on to say, “I can simply take the game on, and if I want to smack someone for six first ball, then I’m able to do that freely.”

Due to the rise of players like as Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis, Steve Smith’s place in Twenty20 cricket had been increasingly precarious in recent years. Smith had held the No. 3 position, which Marsh has since taken over.

Smith batted twice in each of the three Twenty20 matches that were played against Sri Lanka. He scored five runs off four balls in the second match, and then played an unbeaten game in which he scored 37 runs off 27 balls in the third match.

His strike rate in four innings this year is 120.37, which is a significant improvement from 91.89 in three innings during the World Cup in the previous year. From the 16th of October to the 13th of November, Australia will play host to the Twenty20 World Cup.
