The schedule clash that will cause England players, notably ace bowler Jofra Archer, to miss the Vitality Blast Finals Day has frustrated Sussex captain Tymal Mills. The England T20I series against Australia and the domestic T20 event final showdown have generated discussion regarding whether international cricket should take precedence over domestic competitions.
England’s Twenty20 International series against Australia, which is slated to take place on September 13 and 15, will take place on the same day as the Vitality Blast Finals Day at Edgbaston on September 14.
Due to this overlap, important players for their county teams are unavailable on one of the most important days in the domestic cricket season. When talking about the circumstances, Mills, who guided Sussex to a remarkable eight-wicket victory over Lancashire in the quarter-finals, didn’t hold back.
“It’s quite dumb, to be honest, that no England players will be available as far as I know. It goes without saying that none of the England players will be present, but it is truly unfortunate for us to lose a player of Jof’s calibre. He was cited as saying, “Whoever steps in for him will have big boots to fill.”

In addition, he discussed the disorganised schedule and underlined how losing their best bowler, Archer, will damage them in the summit showdown.
“We are quite hurt because Jofra Archer is removed from your team, which is a significant loss. It’s unfortunate that other counties, like Surrey, may be able to compensate for their losses slightly better than we can, but such is life. The starting eleven on the 14th will need to perform better. However, he continued, “I’m sure not many people will agree with the schedule and say, ‘Yeah, it’s great.”
After overcoming Durham to earn a position on Finals Day, Surrey may lose as many as four players to England duty. Warwickshire may be without Dan Mousley and Jacob Bethell as they await their quarter-final outcome. Mills underlined how important it is to have elite players present for an event of this magnitude.
“I am aware that if Warwickshire defeats Gloucestershire on Friday, two of their better players—Moussley and Bethell—will be out. It’s depressing. You want your best players there because it’s a huge day of the year,” he said.

Sussex, which was eliminated from the quarterfinals the previous year, has won ten of the fifteen games in 2024. In his debut season leading the T20 squad, Mills has instilled an upbeat and energetic style of play that has allowed the team to routinely earn high points.
