The WPL 2024 auction took place on December 9 in Mumbai. Thirty seats were up for grabs, and some athletes received ridiculous offers. 165 players were put up for sale at the WPL 2024.
The Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and UP Warriorz were the five teams competing for 30 players; hence, there was intense competition for each player. Due to team makeup, finances, and monetary constraints, many players were left out. We examine – in this essay.
The top 5 foreign players that didn’t sell at the 2024 WPL auction are listed below:
1. Amy Jones
Amy Jones, an experienced keeper-batter from England, maintained her basic price of INR 40 lakhs. Amy Jones is a sharpshooter who has amassed 1380 T20I runs with a strike rate of 122.28 and an average of 21.77, respectively. Jones didn’t find a buyer despite his incredible hitting record and keeping skills, since every team had backups and other quality keepers.
2. Amanda-Jade Wellington
Amanda-Jade Wellington, an all-rounder from New Zealand, has taken 28 wickets in 22 white-ball matches in her relatively short international career. Nonetheless, she’s been somewhat involved in the T20 circuit. She averaged 11.65 with the ball in WBBL 2023 and took 23 wickets at an amazing economy of 5.46 from 15 innings. She has been quite effective with the ball. However, she was unable to locate a buyer in the WPL 2024 auction.
3. Lea Tahuhu
New Zealander Lea Tahuhu is the women’s cricket player with the fastest pace by far, and she draws a lot of attention wherever she plays. She has an equally outstanding record, taking 78 wickets at an economy of 6.02 in 80 Twenty20 Internationals, with a high of 4/6. Tahuhu did not receive a bid for herself in the WPL 2024, despite having participated in the women’s T20 league.
4. Deandra Dottin
Easily one of the best players to come out of the West Indies, Deandra Dottin is the first woman to achieve a century in Twenty20 international cricket. She played 127 WT20Is, accumulating 2697 runs with two hundred and twelve fifties. She is a Barbados native. With her medium-paced bowling, she also amassed 62 wickets at a best of 5/5.
Dottin has refuted the contentious medical exclusion from the Gujarat Giants’ WPL 2023 roster. But because Dottin’s base price was the highest at INR 50 lakhs, she was unable to find a buyer in the WPL 2024 auction.
5. Chamari Athapaththu
Legendary footballer Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka was regarded as one of the top players in the WPL 2024 auction. She had a basic price of INR 30 lakhs, but for the second year in a row, she didn’t sell. Almost single-handedly winning the first-ever historic ODI series against New Zealand, she has had a spectacular year, amassing 415 ODI runs at an average of 69.16 and striking at 125.37 in 2023.
With 114 runs at a strike rate of 165.21, she also guided Sri Lanka to victory over England in a T20I series. She won the 2023 season’s Player of the Tournament title while playing for Sydney Thunder in the just finished WBBL.
