Gautam Gambhir, a former batter for India, is the overwhelming favourite to succeed Rahul Dravid as head coach of the Indian men’s senior squad. Former cricket player WV Raman has also been shortlisted as a possible candidate to become the next head coach of India, along with Gambhir.
Gambhir has only coached the Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants of the Indian Premier League, while comparing the experiences of the two prospects. Gambhir assisted KKR in winning their third IPL championship during his first season as the team’s coach.
However, WV Raman has a wealth of coaching expertise, having coached in women’s national teams, the IPL, and domestic cricket.
Raman and Gambhir’s services should be considered by the Indian cricket board. One can accomplish that in a variety of ways, for as by appointing Raman as batting coach and Gambhir as head coach, or by giving Raman more influence over red ball operations. A knowledgeable source was cited by News18 as stating, “There are many ways to use them because both can benefit Indian cricket and that’s what one should look at.”
“As a stand-in coach for several U-19 and A series, Raman witnessed these young players develop in cramped conditions. As the team prepares to go through a significant change in the next years, he might be the best person to guide these guys. That would probably start in T20s following the World Cup and ODIs; in the upcoming 12 to 15 months, Tests will also see that, the insider continued.
It is noteworthy that WV Raman was physically present at the first round of interviews, while Gautam Gambhir appeared virtually. When Gambhir and Raman gave their presentations on who should lead the Indian squad going forward, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) was ready to grill both of them.
