When it came time for India to bat, Dhawan, Shubman Gill (50), and Iyer each scored a fifty, and all-rounder Washington Sundar contributed a quickfire cameo of 37 runs off of 16 balls, which helped India reach 306/7 in their allotted 50 overs.
Both the fast bowler Lockie Ferguson (3/59) and Southee took three wickets for their respective teams. Adam Milne was also successful in obtaining a scalp.
In their pursuit of 307, India had the New Zealanders at 88/3 after 19.5 overs. But New Zealand was able to pull off the victory thanks to a fourth-wicket partnership of 221 runs between Tom Latham (145 not out off 104 balls) and Kane Williamson (94 not out off 98 balls), who was the captain.
For India, the bowling performance of debutant Umran Malik (2/66) stood out as one of the best. Another wicket was taken by Shardul Thakur.
