The International Cricket Council (ICC) has designated Dr. Vignaesh Shankaran of Germany, Sumod Damodar of Botswana, and Richard Done of Papua New Guinea as the candidates for the position of (CEC). United Arab Emirates’ Mubasir Usmani was elected as an Associate Nation Director to the ICC Board in July. As a result of his leaving, three candidates are vying for the coveted position.
Given that they both lost by one vote in the previous election, Damodar and Done are probably favorites going into this one. After serving three terms as CEC, Damodar was defeated by Usmani. In addition, he presided over the African Cricket Association. In relation to Done, the veteran expresses disappointment that the ICC has altered the World Cup qualification route by combining the Regarding the qualification competition, East Asia Pacific and Asia are the regions involved. By putting the East Asia Pacific teams up against more formidable Asian teams, this effectively ups the competition for them.
“There was a general sense of disappointment throughout the EAP area. You know, you don’t deserve a spot, it seems to be saying when it looks at us as an area. Despite their being 20 teams in the World Cup, we were ranked 19 coming into that event and 20 at the moment. Hence, we most likely earn a spot based just on rankings. Done, the CEO of PNG Cricket, was cited as saying, “Their argument is that the region is much weaker and it should be challenging that stronger region to earn a spot.”
“That is not the reason I am interested in it. For more than 20 years, I have put a lot of effort into Associate cricket. Staying on CEC requires you to keep making
a distinction through collaborating with all regions and members to guarantee that the variety of Associate viewpoints is recognized at CEC and to foster the growth of our Associate members’ futures for the advancement of cricket worldwide. In order for members to prepare more effectively and far in advance, he said, “I specifically want to see more consistency and certainty in the competition structures and funding model.”
There will be a week-long CEC election.
2023 marked the beginning of the CEC’s mandate, which has two years remaining. A two-year term will be granted to the chosen member following the elections, which are scheduled for September 12 and 18.
