The Sri Lanka cricket board announced on Tuesday that an investigation will be conducted into allegations of sexual assault made against Danushka Gunathilaka, a batter for Sri Lanka who competed in the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia.
According to a statement made by Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC), the investigation panel will look into a number of other alleged incidents that occurred during the reigning Asia Cup winners’ time in Australia. The panel will be comprised of a retired High Court judge named Justice Sisira Ratnayake, an attorney named Niroshana Perera, and an attorney named Asela Rekawa.
“Upon submission of the said report by the panel, the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket will take stern disciplinary action against the players and or officials,” the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement. “If proved guilty of any wrongdoing or negligence when carrying out official duties, the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket will take stern disciplinary action against the players and or officials.”
In addition, the panel will immediately request an explanation from the team management on Gunathilaka’s behaviour and the other issues that have occurred, the statement said.
There are also tales of a brawl that took place in a casino in Brisbane that included another player.
The left-handed bowler, who is 31 years old and was detained on Sunday before the squad left Australia, was granted bail by a local court in Sydney on Monday, at the same time that the SLC suspended him from all forms of the game with immediate effect.
After finishing in fourth place in Group 1, the Sri Lankan squad left Australia on Saturday without Gunathilaka. This resulted in the team being eliminated from contention for a semi-final spot.
During his one and only outing for Sri Lanka in their Super 12 qualification match against Namibia, Gunathilaka was dismissed without scoring.
