Ravindra Jadeja was fined 25 percent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for applying ointment to his finger without alerting the umpires. “The management of the Indian squad said that the finger spinner was applying the treatment to a swollen index finger on his bowling hand. This was done without permission from the umpires on the field “ICC noted in a press release.
The ICC further explained that the match referee was persuaded that Jadeja did not apply the cream for any other reason that could have led to ball tampering charges.
“In deciding to sanction the player in addition to the Level 1 sanction he imposed, the Match Referee was convinced that the cream was administered to the player’s finger for medical grounds alone. The cream was not applied to the ball as an artificial substance, hence it did not alter the condition of the ball in violation of clause 41.3 of the ICC playing conditions – Unfair Play – The Match Ball – Changing its Condition “said the ICC declaration.
