At the auction for the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made the most expensive buy in their history by purchasing Ben Stokes. Stokes was brought on board by the four-time defending champions at a salary of INR 16.25 crore. In addition to leading England in the Test series, Stokes is currently being considered for a possible promotion to the position of captain at Chennai. However, Scott Styris, a former all-rounder for New Zealand, believes that the England star might perhaps take over the batting duties from MS Dhoni before the 16th season of the league itself.
Stokes is without a doubt one of the most in-demand all-rounders in all of cricket’s international competitions. Throughout the course of his career in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Stokes has repeatedly demonstrated his abilities both with the bat and with the ball. But does he have the leadership skills necessary to take over the Chennai Super Kings?
During a discussion on Jio Cinema, Styris speculated that Dhoni would immediately hand over the captaincy of the team to Stokes, same to how he had done with Ravindra Jadeja in the previous iteration of the competition.
“I believe that to be the case; I believe that he will be the captain. We have witnessed MS Dhoni’s attempt to hand off the captaincy to another player, and he has not been playing cricket on a consistent basis in the time between IPL seasons.
This is simply an opportunity for MS Dhoni to hand off the baton to the next player. In my opinion, the answer is yes, and they will start right immediately. Ben Stokes has been given the role of captain “Styris remarked.
Dhoni, who may be playing his final season for CSK in the IPL, is saddled with the obligation of identifying a player to take his place as captain.
The decision from the previous year to give Ravindra Jadeja the post was unsuccessful. Because Jadeja made the decision to step down in the middle of the season, Chennai Super Kings were compelled to make Dhoni their new captain.
If it turns out that Stokes is in fact being considered for the role of captain, the Super Kings could think it best to wait until he has had some time to find his footing before making the decision to place the weight of the captaincy on his shoulders.
