The Women’s T20 League is the anticipated name for the Twenty20 franchise league for women that is currently being developed by the BCCI. Five clubs, for which applications have been requested, will be formed through a player auction in February.
The Women’s T20 League is going to operate in a manner comparable to the Indian Premier League. According to ESPNcricinfo, the last day for Indian players to register for the auction is January 26 at five o’clock in Indian Standard Time (IST).
This competition will take the place of the Women’s T20 Challenge, which began as a one-off game between two teams in 2018 and then expanded to a three-team exhibition tournament in 2019, followed by two further editions in 2020 and 2022. In 2019, this competition will replace the Women’s T20 Challenge.
The document titled ‘Guidance note for Indian players’ that was shared by the board with the Indian players states that the basic price for capped Indian players is set at INR 30 lakh, INR 40 lakh, and INR 50 lakh. This information was obtained from ESPNcricinfo.
The starting price for uncapped players has been restricted at 10 and 20 million Indian rupees, respectively.
Instead of going through agents or managers, players should register for the Women’s T20 League directly with the associations that govern their respective states.
In February of the previous year, former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly announced that the Women’s Indian Premier League would commence in the year 2023.
In August, the BCCI reached a consensus on the March timetable. As a direct consequence of this, the BCCI accelerated the women’s domestic calendar, which normally takes place between the months of November and April, in order to make room for the franchise tournament.
Since the official announcement regarding the women’s T20 league, a number of the men’s IPL clubs have been sending out talent scouts to find players who they might eventually sign for the women’s tournament if they are awarded the rights to own a franchise in the competition.
It is thought that the Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders are all interested in purchasing a team for the women’s league. Royal Challengers Bangalore may also be interested.
There has been an increasing clamour for the Women’s Indian Premier League to commence ever since India finished in second place in the ODI World Cup in 2017.
It started picking up steam when they made it all the way to the finals of the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in 2020, but it came to a grinding halt when limits imposed by Covid-19 prompted the suspension of women’s cricket and other competitive sports events.
A request for bids was issued by BCCI earlier this month for the media rights to the five-team tournament that is scheduled to take place between 2023 and 2027.
