In Thailand’s opening match of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 against Malaysia, skipper Thipatcha Putthawong made the decision to bat first directly at the toss.
Putthawong stated she wished to take advantage of the windy and sunny circumstances, so she brought a translator along for the toss. With usual skipper Naruemol Chaiwai out due to injury and Natthakan Chantham out due to illness, Thailand has a young team. They gave 20-year-old Nannaphat Chaihan, a hitter who was supposed to open the innings alongside the more seasoned Nattaya Boochatham, his first international cap.
Winifred Duraisingam, the captain of Malaysia, was unconcerned about losing the toss because she was confident in her team’s balance. Mas Elysa, a top-order batsman for Malaysia, has been excluded despite being the only batter with more than 1000 runs in women’s Twenty20 internationals, other from Duraisingam.
The game is being played on the same field as the two matches from the Women’s Asia Cup’s opening day.
After examining the field, Marina Iqbal reported that it was firm, dry and had a thin layer of grass covering it. “Anything pitched short” might cling to the surface, she said.
