Matthew Hayden proposed that Virat Kohli start the Twenty20 World Cup 2024, which will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies next month, alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.
In the current Indian Premier League (IPL), Kohli is the league’s top run scorer with 634 runs from 12 matches at an average of 70.44 and a strike rate of 153.51. He has been in excellent form. This season, he has opened the batting and amassed five fifties and one century. The specialised openers in India’s 15-man T20 World Cup team are skipper Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal. It’s expected that Kohli will bat at number three. But Hayden, the renowned Australian opener, would prefer that the Delhi batter bat first with Yashasvi. The former cricket player turned pundit selected Rohit as the fourth batsman and Suryakumar Yadav as the third.
Speaking to Star Sports, Hayden stated, “If you have to make a change in that combination, I would be very happy if you would tell me if I could open with Kohli and Jaiswal, I would have said absolutely yes.”
Next, I would place Rohit at number four and Suryakumar Yadav at number three. And I think that top four is the ideal combo. Virat is a master of the first six, which is why I say that. And there are other excellent choices, like Rohit, once the power hitting comes into play. Take a look at his incredible stats at number 4. “Those outperform his opening acts,” Hayden continued.
In the IPL 2024, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal struggle.
Yashasvi had an incredible IPL season the previous year. He hasn’t been able to reach his full potential, though, this year. The southpaw has only managed to score 320 runs at a strike rate of 157.64 and an average of 32 in 11 games. There is just one fifty and one century to the Rajasthan Royals batter’s credit.
For the Mumbai Indians, Rohit had a strong start to the competition, but in recent games, his play has concerningly slowed down. The right-handed batter has scored 349 runs in 13 games with a strike rate of 145.42 and an average of 29.08. His lone notable performance came in a losing effort against the Chennai Super Kings, where he amassed a century.
