On Saturday, June 15, at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad, New Zealand defeated an inexperienced Ugandan team to record their first victory of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Following their earlier-round losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies, the Kane Williamson-led team made a dismal start to their World Cup campaign and were eventually eliminated. Having won the toss, New Zealand decided to field first.
Uganda’s hitters endured again another poor day as they failed to find any solace against a potent bowling lineup led by the Kiwis. With a score of 9/3 after six overs, Uganda had the lowest powerplay score of any team in the tournament’s history. The only batter with several double-digit scores was Kenneth Waiswa. However, he left the game after only 11 runs, thus his scores were similarly unimpressive.
For the first time in the competition, New Zealand wins.
With 39 runs, Ug`anda’s total from the T20 World Cup earlier in the competition against the West Indies was tied for the lowest ever. The Brian Masaba-led team had a similar performance against the BlackCaps, scoring just 40 runs in 18.4 overs. With three wickets in hand, Tim Southee was the main wrecker with the ball.
The ongoing grand event is experiencing a sequence of low scores that highlight the unpredictable nature of the sport, despite IPL 2024 being a run-fest with scores of 200+ being set in every match.

With a very easy chase of the mark, Devon Conway led New Zealand with 22 runs off of 15 balls. The New Zealand side won the match by nine wickets with 88 balls remaining, with Finn Allen taking the lone wicket for them. Due to his outstanding spell, Southee was named Player of the Match. Despite being eliminated from the competition, the previous runners-up are competing to cap off a successful season.
