On June 11, at the Nassau County Stadium in New York, Pakistan and Canada squared off in Match 22 of the T20 World Cup 2024.
Pakistan chose to bowl first after winning the toss. With 54 runs on the board, Canada lost half of their side in 10 overs due to pressure from their bowlers from the first ball. While wickets were falling at one end, Aaron Johnson held the innings together at the other. He helped Canada reach their modest goal of 107 with a vital 52 runs in 44 balls.
Saim Ayub, Pakistan’s opener, was out in the fifth over with the team down 20 runs, but Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam kept up the pressure. Babar was out at 33, but the pair made up 63 runs for the second wicket to put Pakistan in a commanding position. With just four runs scored, Fakhar Zaman left the game soon after. Usman Khan, who amassed 53* runs, and Rizwan helped the squad defeat Pakistan by seven wickets.
Pakistan maintains hope for the playoffs
After dropping their last two games, Pakistan was in desperate need of a victory. Their triumph over Canada has maintained their chances for the competition. However, a lot will rely on how well other matches play out and whether India wins all of its remaining games. They will be hoping for them to lose the upcoming match as the USA will be their toughest obstacle.
