On Thursday, June 13, the 26th match of the current Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 pitted the West Indies versus New Zealand. The Kiwis were in for a must-win match at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad, although the match had equal significance for both sides because a win would have kept them in the competition.
In the current scenario, Kane Williamson won the toss and choose to bowl first on a challenging surface. Trent Boult’s first over strike sent Johnson Charles for a five-ball duck, instantly rewarding the decision. As the BlackCaps continued to build on their momentum, the hosts were eventually cut to 23/4 at the conclusion of the powerplay.
Still, Sherfane Rutherford moved to the centre during the sixth over, when Rovman Powell fell. Rutherford kept the scoreboard moving even as wickets continued to fall at one end, eventually breaking clear with his strokes. With Gudakesh Motie and the stunning all-rounder combining for 37 runs to score all the runs, the Windies reached 149/9 after 20 overs thanks to the no. 11 batter’s preference for staying on the non-striker’s end of the pitch.
With three wickets in four overs, including a maiden, Boult was the Kiwis’ finest bowler. Along with Mitchell Santner and James Neesham, who each took a wicket, the pace tandem of Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson also contributed with a few wickets.
In response, Powell’s men entered the game forcefully after dismissing Devon Conway in the third over since the BlackCaps were unable to score runs quickly. In order to lure Williamson to the crease, Finn Allen left the pitch in the sixth over. However, he failed to make an impression and was caught for a 2-ball-1 by Gudakesh Motie. The Kiwi hitters were soon unable to release their arms and smash at will because wickets were falling at regular intervals.
Glenn Phillips and Santner were at the crease in the final three overs, and the game was still in the balance. However, Alzarri Joseph’s superb death bowling took care of a well-positioned Phillips for 40 (33). Gudakesh Motie’s three-for in the contest came after Joseph claimed three more wickets. The Windies won the match by 13 runs as Santner attempted to smash the 33 runs needed off the final over but could only manage 19 with three sixes.

The team led by Rovman Powell won three straight games and swept into the Super Eight Stage. The fact that the New Zealanders have not yet created an account on the points table exacerbates their situation and raises the possibility of their first-ever elimination from the league stage of the competition.
