The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 Event Technical Committee has authorised Hazratullah Zazai to take Mujeeb ur Rahman’s place in the Afghanistan team.
After Mujeeb ur Rahman was ruled out owing to an injury to his right index finger, Hazratullah—who has played 43 Twenty20 internationals—was picked as a replacement. A player cannot be formally added to the team until the Event Technical Committee has approved their replacement.
In the meantime, Afghanistan is having an incredible tournament at the Twenty20 World Cup in 2024. After defeating PNG by seven wickets, they have already advanced to the Super 8. Afghanistan and West Indies are the only unbeaten teams in their group and have one more game to play before the Super 8 starts.
“I’m thrilled to have advanced to the next round. Afghanistan is participating in the T20I Super Eight for the first time. I’m really happy with the lads’ performance because they adjusted to the circumstances quite fast. Possessing someone like Farooqi is crucial, and it also helps if you take a few wickets later on.

When assistance is available, you should attack as much as possible to benefit from it. You must attack in addition to the batter, even if they are attacking. It is a blessing that he is with us. In regards to Afghanistan’s middle order, we are pleased with the manner the openers performed in the opening two matches.
“The middle order, however, is ready; they simply require more time. In T20 cricket, having only 15–18 balls might make things difficult at times. In these conditions, it is difficult to hit from ball one. They also scored runs in the local competition. More opportunities will allow them to perform and do their all for the squad. One of the best things about playing franchise cricket is that you can predict the wicket, since I am currently travelling to St. Lucia. The players who haven’t played as much, like Gurbaz and Nabi, must hear about the experiences of the majority of the people who have played in St. Lucia.
It’s about playing cricket in such conditions the way you naturally do. It is about how we will play that kind of cricket under those circumstances; we will not alter it. Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan stated following their advancement to the next round, “Everyone has that ability to adjust to the conditions quickly and hopefully, we will have a good game there as well.”
