At the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Friday, June 14, England defeated Oman to record their first victory of the T20 World Cup 2024.
The defending champions were motivated to win this match after their opening match against Scotland rained out and they lost to archrivals Australia by 36 runs. After winning the toss, Jos Buttler, the captain of England, decided to field first.
The previous champions made the right choice in bowling first as they quickly took four wickets during the powerplay. Zeeshan Maqsood, Khalid Kail, and Ayaan Khan, who added just one run to the total, all walked back to the pavilion in the middle order. The only batter from Oman to score more than ten runs was Shoaib Khan, who was removed from the game after only eleven runs on 23 balls. The side captained by Aqib Ilyas was bowled out for just 47 runs in 13.2 overs by England bowlers, who tore through the opposing batting order. The total from Oman ended up being the fourth-lowest in T20 World Cup history.
Adil Rashid, a 36-year-old spinner who took four wickets while only giving up 11 runs, was England’s main ball-winner. Mark Wood and Jofra Archer both contributed, ultimately securing three wickets apiece.
As they reach the target in 3.1 overs, England makes history.
With the defence champs chasing a modest total, they had an excellent chance to improve their net run rate (NRR) and increase their prospects of making it to the Super Eight. Phil Salt, the opener, demonstrated his purpose from the opening ball by hitting Bilal Khan’s first two deliveries for enormous sixes. But in the third ball, Khan got his sweet revenge, dismissing the deadly right-hand hitter.
Jos Buttler, who was accompanied by Will Jacks in his pursuit of the total, had a poor day at the bat and left the pavilion having only managed five runs. Buttler and Jonny Bairstow were ultimately responsible for helping England cross the finish line. With four boundaries and a six, the England captain amassed 24 runs in eight balls without losing. It was the fastest run chase in the tournament’s history as the Three Lions eventually triumphed by eight wickets with 101 balls remaining.
