Captain Suryakumar Yadav was left speechless by an unexpected inquiry on his potential as an IPL captain ahead of India’s three-match T20I series against Bangladesh.
The 34-year-old is now one of India’s most important players, especially in the shortest game type. Though he captains the national squad in Twenty20 Internationals, he has not yet led an IPL franchise. When a reporter questioned the cricket player about his captaincy in the lucrative league prior to the game, the player gave a thought-provoking response. He also thought back to his interactions with Mumbai Indians.
“Aapne googly daal diya aapne” (laughs) “You gave me the wrong impression. I’m loving my new position as captain of India. He said at the press conference, “I used to give my input on whatever I felt at the time when I was playing under Rohit bhai’s captaincy in MI.”

The Mumbai native has so far shown himself to be a capable skipper. He captained the squad for the first time in 2023, leading them to a 4-1 victory in the five-match T20I series played at home against Australia. Later that year, India drew 1-1 in his debut international match as captain against South Africa.
Following their victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, India recently headed to Sri Lanka, where they won the series 3-0 led by captain Surya.
The right-hand batsman said he is enjoying captaining his country in Twenty20 Internationals and isn’t too worried about being named the Indian Premier League captain. Yadav is eager to see what is ahead for him.
“I’m feeling positive for India as well. I captained against Australia and South Africa before, against Sri Lanka. I’ve picked up tips on leading the team from other captains.
