Due to a sports hernia, top batsman Suryakumar Yadav will miss the forthcoming T20I series against Afghanistan as well as the first few weeks of the 2024 IPL, which is a serious setback to team India. The daring batter will have surgery in Germany for the same condition, and only then will it be known when he may return.
Notably, KL Rahul, the wicketkeeper batter for India, had surgery in July 2022 due to the same physical problem. A sports hernia, according to WebMD, is excruciating damage to soft tissue (muscle, tendon, or ligament) that happens in the groin region. Most commonly, it is observed in sports like ice hockey, football, soccer, and wrestling that require quick direction changes or strong twisting motions.
In these activities, the pelvis must be twisted while the feet are grounded, which puts the abdomen or groin at risk. Sporting individuals are not the only ones who experience it; anyone can experience it, although athletes frequently do. Often referred to as athletic pulbagia, sportsman’s hernia, or Gilmore’s groin, a sports hernia is not a real hernia.
Concurrently, as per a Times of India story, Suryakumar Yadav is recuperating at the National Cricket Academy and is scheduled to travel to Germany for surgery in the coming days.
“SKY was diagnosed with a sports hernia lately. At the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, he is presently recovering. He’s flying to Munich, Germany, in two or three days to get surgery on it. It implies he’s not going to play for Mumbai this season in the Ranji Trophy and will probably miss the Mumbai Indians’ opening IPL games,” a BCCI insider told TOI.
For more than a year, Suryakumar Yadav has dominated at bat in Twenty20 internationals.
In recent T20I series, India played South Africa and Australia back-to-back under Suryakumar Yadav leadership. In the third Twenty20 International against South Africa in Johannesburg, where he had earlier struck his fourth Twenty20 century by hitting 100 off 56 balls, he suffered an ankle injury. Fans will be hoping that the 33-year-old recovers in time for the T20 World Cup 2024, which starts on June 1. The 33-year-old has been the top-ranked T20I hitter for more than a year.
