Sanath Jayasuriya, a former cricket player, has been named by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) as the senior men’s team’s temporary head coach.
Following Sri Lanka’s disappointing performance in the recently finished T20 World Cup, when the team was unable to advance to the competition’s Super Eights, former coach Chris Silverwood announced his resignation.
Sri Lanka joined the competition as one of the title contenders given the circumstances. They had good batters and spinners who may have advanced them to the next round, but they lost the competition as a team due to a collective error. Accepting responsibility for his actions, Silverwood tendered his retirement from the national squad, despite his otherwise good performance.
Sanath Jayasuriya, who advised the team during the major competition, has been elevated, although SLC is still searching for Silverwood’s long-term replacement. After the forthcoming home series against India and England, which the former opener will be in charge of, the board is expected to name a full-time replacement.
Beginning in December 2023, the 55-year-old also worked as a cricket consultant for Sri Lanka, managing coaches and players at the High-Performance Centre in Khettarama.
Men in Blue will next visit the Lankan Lions.
On July 27, Sri Lanka will play their first Twenty20 international match against India. The players who would perform well in the series against Zimbabwe are likely to replace Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja. A large number of the T20 World Cup winning team is set to return. With the team’s victory in the T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid’s tenure came to an end, and India was also going through a coaching change.

It is anticipated that Gautam Gambhir, a former cricket player, will take over as captain. It is said that the paperwork is finished, and an announcement is anticipated soon. Considering how active both Jayasuriya and Sri Lanka were while they were playing, his first assignment against them will be an exciting match.
