The Duleep Trophy 2023 final concluded with the South Zone, led by Hanuma Vihari, winning the championship after defeating the West Zone. Notably, the summit match was place from July 12–16 in Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. When South Zone chose to bat after losing the toss, they got off to a terrible start when opener Ravikumar Samarth was dismissed for only seven runs. But their innings were stabilized by the hits of Tilak Varma, Mayank Agarwal, and captain Hanuma Vihari. Agarwal scored 28 runs, and Varma tacked on another 40 runs. Vihari contributed to his team scoring 213 runs in the first innings with a superb 63-run performance.
Shams Mulani got three wickets for West Zone, while a number of other bowlers also took down wickets to maintain the trend. West Zone struggled at the plate in the opening inning, hoping to reduce their deficit and build a sizable lead.
No batter went big after Prithvi Shaw’s 65-run outing. Cheteshwar Pujara got out for just nine runs, Suryakumar Yadav only scored eight runs, while Priyank Panchal was out for 11. West Zone was dismissed for just 146 runs, and the opposition made all effort to take advantage of the advantage and establish a lofty aim.
South Zone scored 230 runs, setting a goal of 298 runs for West Zone to win thanks to solid innings from Mayank Agarwal, Hanuma Vihari, Ricky Bhui, and Washington Sundar.
In trying to chase down the goal of 298 runs, West Zone got off to the worst of beginnings as Prithvi Shaw was removed for just seven runs. Priyank Panchal’s heroic attempt ended in vain. As he played an outstanding knock of 95 runs during the run chase, West Zone captain Priyank Panchal kept his team’s chances alive going into Day 5.
Sai Kishore and Vasuki Koushik, who both claimed four wickets apiece, helped South Zone to a 75-run victory, but their spells proved to be too much for West Zone to handle.
