The news that Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has extended his contract has made former player Sourav Ganguly quite happy. The 51-year-old stated that he did not find the BCCI’s decision to keep him in the team surprising because India performed admirably in the just-finished ODI World Cup.
Sourav Ganguly was a major factor in getting him into the lineup when Ravi Shastri’s contract expired.
Notably, Dravid became the team’s head coach following the 2021 T20 World Cup. Following the ODI World Cup, Dravid’s future was fraught with uncertainty since VVS Laxman was the front-runner to succeed him, but the former chose to remain on the squad. Sourav Ganguly has now expressed his best wishes to Dravid for the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The fact that they have faith in David is not surprising. We persuaded him to take on this role while I served as the board president. And the news yesterday that his term has been extended makes me very delighted.
“That has always been the situation, regardless of his desire for it. I hope he has success in June at the World Cup. This time, he was very, very close. With the manner in which they played, they were undoubtedly the greatest team in the competition, even though they didn’t win. That means he has another seven months to prepare for the West Indies World Cup. Hopefully, he would be a champion by then instead of a runner-up, Sourav Ganguly told media in Kolkata.
Regarding Dravid’s tenure, neither BCCI nor Dravid provided clarification in the meantime. When questioned about it, the former cricket player said the board will explain things after he and the other support staff members sign the new contract in the coming days. They agreed on verbal conditions, but it is anticipated that the agreement will be formalized before the team departs for South Africa.
