Shukri Conrad discusses Dean Elgar's rejection of his captaincy, saying, "This was the correct fit for me and for us moving ahead."

Shukri Conrad, the new head coach of South Africa, has taken a harsh stance against those who attacked Dean Elgar, the country’s former Test captain, after Dean Elgar was passed over for the longest format captaincy. Temba Bavuma, another member of his side, was given the reins as captain, and he is now South Africa’s all-format captain.

Following South Africa’s two consecutive Test cricket losses, particularly after their disappointing tour of Australia, which jeopardised their chances of enhancing their position for a finals berth in the World Test Championship, Dean Elgar was passed over for captain.

Shukri Conrad was described by The South African as saying, “Dean’s done an excellent job over the last couple of years, and that’s something I made clear in my conversation with him.
Conrad claimed that Dean had been outstanding as South Africa’s captain, and that during his time in charge, the team had achieved several significant victories. Also, he encouraged the media to refrain from needlessly stirring up a commotion about the management’s choice.

The choice to give Temba Bavuma the captaincy was made entirely by the South African administration, he said, and everyone should be courteous enough to protect its purity at all costs. Although he claimed to have a good vibe with Bavuma, he never said that Elgar was being completely ignored.

Elgar would actively participate in the decision-making process and provide leadership to support Bavuma in his efforts in every way possible.
But I choose to do this. Temba and I thought we made a terrific team, and Dean will continue to play a significant role in our leadership team. This does not equate to Temba being a superior captain to Dean. Nonetheless, I believed that looking forward, this was the best fit for both me and us. Temba and I have gone a long way. He is aware of my preferred methods, and I am well aware of his preferred methods of participation and management, Conrad continued.
