Recently, Lakhwinder Singh, the father of Shubman Gill, provided insight into how his son used a “Charpoy” (a light bedstead) to assist him in enhancing his cricket skills. He gave an account of how he personally prepared Shubman Gill to take on fast bowlers before he emerged as one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket history.
Lakhwinder explained the non-traditional technique of batting at one end and tossing and skidding a ball on the charpoy. Gill was intended to learn rapid responses to rapid pace and bounce, especially while facing pace bowlers. In the current Indian batting lineup, the 24-year-old has developed into one of the top batters against fast bowling, demonstrating the effectiveness of this special preparation.
Shubman Gill was able to locate the middle of the bat more frequently as a result, Lakhwinder told The Times of India.
“I made the decision to train him after noticing his interest in the game. I forced him to play between 500 and 700 balls each day. I used to toss the ball over a manji (charpoy) to help him become proficient with rapid bowling. After skidding off the charpoy, the ball usually travels more quickly. He used a solitary stump as his bat for practice, aside from that.
In order to help him become a top-tier cricket player, we committed 15 years to him. Lakhwinder Singh
Additionally, the father of Shubman Gill went on to say that the reason for their move to Mohali was to give Gill the best coaching and training possible. Gill’s family moved to Mohali from their home town of Chak Khere Wala in Fazilka, a small Punjabi village close to the border between India and Pakistan. Through intensive training and practice at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali, he was able to improve his cricket abilities and level of fitness as a result of this relocation.
“Mohali is over 300 kilometers away from our village. However, we had to bring him here (in Mohali) because there were no amenities there. We gave him all the support he needed to fulfill his cricket goal. To help him become a top-tier cricket player, we devoted 15 years of our lives to him. “To spend as much time as we could with him, we even took time off from work and missed a few family events, such as our relatives’ marriage ceremonies,” Gill’s father said.
