India batsman Shreyas Iyer has disclosed that following the 2023 ODI World Cup, he voiced concerns to the management about his back problems, but he believed his concerns were disregarded.
Playing in the longer format following the World Cup, he struggled greatly and said he felt his concerns were not taken properly. This persistent problem has had an impact on his participation and performance in different games, which has made this a difficult time in his cricket career.
The captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stated, “I was definitely struggling after the World Cup in the longer format,” as reported by ESPN Cricinfo one day prior to the IPL final in Chennai versus Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). “I expressed my worry, but nobody was willing to listen to me.
Shreyas Iyer struggled to recover from his back ailment, which prevented him from competing in the October–November ODI World Cup till the Asia Cup the previous year. He was selected for the first two home Test matches against England in early 2024, but omitted from the following three. He still missed a few Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai nevertheless, claiming “back spasms.”
Shreyas Iyer was known to have had back spasms following the second Test, but he was still eligible to be selected.
When Iyer skipped a Ranji Trophy game to attend a KKR pre-season session, controversy ensued. In spite of this, he was not given a central BCCI contract and missed the Ranji Trophy semifinals and final. This came after BCCI secretary Jay Shah issued a caution to players not to put the IPL ahead of domestic cricket.
Shreyas Iyer observed, “But at the same time the competition is with myself,” as he thought back on his voyage. As the IPL got closer, all I wanted to see was that I put in my best effort and that, regardless of the prior planning and strategizing that we [KKR] accomplished, if we could have carried it out to the best of our abilities, we would have been in a terrific position, which is where we are at the moment.”
