Following a thrilling run through the group round of the T20 World Cup 2022, Pakistan blazed their way into the elimination stage, where they won over New Zealand to secure a position in the championship match. The team captained by Babar Azam, who went through many highs and lows throughout the competition, will now face off against England in the championship match, which will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Sunday. In the past, Pakistan has been victorious in the Twenty20 World Cup, achieving this accomplishment by prevailing against Sri Lanka in the championship match held at Lord’s. In their attempt to score 139 runs, the squad lead by Younis Khan did it in just 18.4 overs, achieving their goal with eight wickets remaining. Former all-rounder Shahid Afridi was the standout performer of the night with to his unbeaten knock of 54 runs off of 40 balls. Shoaib Malik also contributed to the team’s success with a good stand, scoring 24 runs off of 22 balls.
Shoaib Malik became overcome with emotion as he reminisced on A Sports about the days leading up to the victory and shared a touching moment in which he stated, “When we were crowned champions of the World Cup in 2009, Younis Khan gave me a call and told me to “hold the trophy.” And that was a truly remarkable experience.”
In addition to Pakistan, England has one title to their record from the Twenty20 World Cup competition. In 2009, the English side was able to accomplish this feat by claiming victory over Australia by a score of seven wickets.
In the match that decided who would play in the finals, Pakistan prevailed against New Zealand by seven wickets on Wednesday.
