The Perth Scorchers and New Zealand starter Finn Allen are about to ink a two-year contract. In an attempt to concentrate more on franchise cricket, he just became the latest member of the Black Caps to decline the central contract. Joining the Scorchers is the first step towards that goal.
The ability for each franchise to sign players to multi-year contracts under the new rules will help them have a stable group of players moving forward. Prior to the Big Bash League season, the Adelaide Strikers and Sydney Sixers, in addition to the Scorchers, were expected to reveal their pre-draft additions. West Indies spinner Akeal Hosein is reportedly linked to the Sixers, however the team has not yet made an official.
Allen, a 25-year-old, was on the central contract list of New Zealand Cricket (NZC), but he later removed himself from it. The fact that the Scorchers’ offer was made so recently, according to, might not have an impact on his decision to forego the central deal. He would miss the late December white-ball series against Sri Lanka, though, as he has officially committed to the Scorchers.
Finn Allen also made history by being the third player from New Zealand to guarantee a spot in the BBL.
Tim Seifart, who also turned down a central contract, joined Melbourne Renegades, while Colin Munro, who declared his retirement from international cricket after missing out on the T20 World Cup selection, signed Brisbane Heat. It’s anticipated that there will be more New Zealanders in the BBL in the days to come, since Trent Boult and Kane Williamson are among the players who have recently chosen not to sign a central contract.
Notably, even though England opener Zak Crawley scored two half-centuries in six innings, the Scorchers had trouble with the opening combination in the 2023–24 season.

With Allen’s impressive T20 cricket record, they signed him in the hopes that he would help them resolve that problem this year. In 126 shortest format games, he has amassed 3544 runs at a strike average of 168.60.
