After his incredible century against South Africa in the fourth Twenty20 International at Johannesburg, which was his second of the series, star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson was overcome with emotion.
In the final Twenty20 International match against South Africa, Samson’s heroics occurred during India’s historic innings of 283/1. There was more to this performance than just stats; it was about a guy who has seen many setbacks in international cricket.
I’m breathing so quickly right now that it’s a little difficult to tell. After two hundred failures and two ducks, I continued to believe in myself and put in a lot of effort, and today it finally paid off. Samson told reporters after his innings, “After a couple of failures, there were a lot of things going on in my head. Abhishek helped me out early on and then Tilak as well.”
I want to keep it short and concentrate on my capabilities: Sanju Samson
With his undefeated 210-run partnership with Tilak Varma, who hit 120* off 47 balls, and his 109* off 56 balls, Sanju Samson made history by being the first two players from a Full Member nation to register hundreds in the same T20I innings. The record for the highest partnership for any wicket in Twenty20 Internationals was broken with their stand.
“I have had numerous partnerships with him; he is a very young player who holds great promise for Indian cricket’s future. It is a pleasure to work with him. Since I lost a few ducks the last time I talked too much, I prefer to keep things simple and concentrate on my abilities. We are pleased to have achieved [this], which is] what our skipper (Suryakumar Yadav) had hoped for,” Samson continued.
