After India defeated Afghanistan in the second Twenty20 International on Sunday, January 14, captain Rohit Sharma made history by becoming the joint-most successful Indian captain in the shortest format. Notably, in his 53rd encounter as captain, Rohit Sharma achieved his 41st victory as an Indian captain in Twenty20 Internationals, drawing even with the illustrious MS Dhoni, who has 41 victories in 72 games.
Against Sri Lanka at home in a 2017 T20I series, Rohit Sharma captained India for the first time. The 36-year-old achieved the record in just 35 balls, becoming the fastest player in the format during his second T20I match as captain. He further led them to a triumph in the T20I tri-series against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in March 2018.
The cricketer, who was born in Nagpur, also captained India during the 2022 T20 World Cup, when they were eliminated after losing to England by 10 wickets in the second semifinal. Once again, Rohit is the front-runner to lead the team in the T20 World Cup 2024, which begins on June 1 in the USA and the West Indies.
In the second match against Afghanistan, the 36-year-old also made history as the first male cricketer to play 150 Twenty20 Internationals, but he was removed for the second time in a row to end the series in the duck position. With 3853 runs in 142 innings at an average of 30.82 and a strike rate of 139.09, along with four hundreds and 29 fifties, Rohit is the second-highest run scorer in T20Is.
In the most recent Twenty20 International against Afghanistan, Rohit Sharma will try to top Dhoni’s record.
Having made his debut in the 2007 tournament’s first edition, he is also the only cricket player to have appeared in every T20 World Cup to date. The last Twenty20 International of the series, which is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, will be contested with the Indian captain hoping to complete a 3-0 rout of Afghanistan.
