Hardik Pandya will captain India in the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which begins on January 3, while Rohit Sharma will return for the three ODIs that follow.
Virat Kohli has also been rested for the T20I series, and Shikhar Dhawan has been left out of the ODI squad following a poor performance in Bangladesh. Rishabh Pant was left out of the ODI and T20I squads after being given a break from the ODI series in Bangladesh before returning for the two Tests.
When Rohit was rested for the 2022 T20 World Cup, Hardik led India in the T20I series in New Zealand in November. Rohit then sustained a thumb injury during an ODI series in Bangladesh earlier in December, forcing him to miss the following two-Test series.
