After missing out on the IPL 2024 playoffs, the Delhi Capitals fired head coach Ricky Ponting. Since his appointment in 2018, the team has made it to the final once, in 2020, where they were defeated by the Mumbai Indians. The IPL franchise’s head coach going forward will be Sourav Ganguly, a former director of cricket.
Keeping in mind the huge auction, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal stated during the last IPL that changes may only be beginning. Ponting’s contract is up, and while it might be extended, the Australian icon won’t be leading the team as Ganguly has already stated he would take over in that role.
“I need to start planning for the IPL in a year. I want the Delhi Capitals to win the IPL once. I’ve started planning now because the big auction isn’t until next year. I have bad news: Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals, will not be returning to the role. Geoffrey Boycott was correct; for the previous seven years, Ponting has failed to lead the team to success. I need to ask the team to consider Indian coaches when I meet with them. The head coach will be me. According to a comment by Ganguly in the Bengali daily Aajkal, “Let’s see how I perform.”
The franchise may decide not to extend the contract of the former Australian cricket player, who was handed full control in the IPL 2024 but did not produce the desired outcomes. For the time being, though, nothing is certain.

The franchise made the audacious decision to fire assistant coaches Shane Watson and Ajit Agarkar following the 2023 Indian Premier League after there were allegations that the management was split between Ganguly and Ponting. Agarkar and Watson were withdrawn to clear the air since Ganguly and Ponting, respectively, supported them.
