Jason Gillespie, a former fast bowler from Australia, has been named Pakistan’s red-ball coach. Many people are taking notice of this choice. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, for example, compared Gillespie to India’s recently recruited head coach, Gautam Gambhir.
Former Ponting teammate Gillespie has established a solid coaching career. His hiring coincides with a pivotal moment in Pakistan cricket history, as the team’s 2024 T20 World Cup performance was below expectations.
Gillespie’s appointment by the Pakistan Cricket Board is a component of a broader reorganisation initiative meant to enhance the team’s performance in the game’s extended format.
Ponting expressed faith in Gillespie’s coaching skills. While highlighting the former teammate’s strengths, Ponting noted the hurdles that the former pacer would face in his new post.
“Gambit and Jason Gillespie are similar. His coaching record has been excellent pretty much everywhere he has worked. He will face some difficulties. Without a doubt, I feel that. However, he approaches things in his own manner and is a quiet individual who thinks deeply, the former stated on the ICC Review.
We, the elderly men who have performed with one another, congratulated Jason Gillespie: Ricky Ponting
The former captain of Australia also discussed the latest developments in Pakistani cricket and mentioned that Gillespie’s new position has been well-received by the former Australian players.
“All of us older guys who have played together have a couple WhatsApp groups that we’ve had over the years. Thus, everyone wished Gillespie well in that role and congratulated him. And to be completely honest, the quantity of changes in that group does not surprise me in the slightest. Although it’s a different format, their T20 World Cup was incredibly disappointing. He said, “You expect similar results to come your way if you are not willing to make some changes.”
The Men in Green have a tight itinerary, so the Australian has his work cut out for him. A two-match Test series against Bangladesh, which begins in Rawalpindi on August 21, will be his maiden task.
