Ricky Ponting, the head coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League and a former batter for Australia, recently spoke out regarding Prithvi Shaw’s career. The 24-year-old made a splash when he was still a youngster and even did well in his early career. But since then, his career has drastically declined.
After working as the Delhi Capitals’ head coach for three years with the 24-year-old, Ricky Ponting believes that Prithvi Shaw hasn’t been able to fully utilise his potential. Shaw is a player that can fit into any international cricket team, according to him, but his current form hasn’t earned him a berth in the team.
“I want to begin with Although I dislike discussing specific individuals, Prithvi shouldn’t stand out. With his skill set, he ought to be the first pick on most teams and a member of every squad. Ponting told Cricbuzz, “He’s had an opportunity to represent India as a young player, making a hundred on his Test debut.”
And as you mentioned, we were unable to locate a spot for him on our DC squad before the halfway point of the year. Thus, it disappoints me as a coach that I can’t develop and maximise the potential of some athletes. However, Ponting continued, “there are only so many times you can try and so much you can offer sometimes.
Shaw has had two respectable IPL seasons with the Delhi Capitals, amassing 479 runs in 2021 and 353 runs in 2019. But for the child, 2024 and 2023 have been terrible. In 16 games over the course of two seasons, he has only managed to score 304 runs.
Shaw last participated in an international match in 2021, therefore it appears the Indian squad has moved on from him as well. Ponting expressed hope that Shaw would be able to succeed in cricket once more.
