In the third and final test of the series against Pakistan, leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed recorded a five-wicket haul on Test debut for England, becoming him the youngest bowler in the history of the Test Match format to get a fifer on debut.
Rehan became the youngest bowler in the history of men’s Test cricket to record a five-wicket haul on their debut at the age of 18 years and 126 days.
When the leg-spinner took his fifth wicket on day three of the Karachi Test, he broke the record previously held by Pat Cummins for most wickets taken in a single match. When Cummins got six wickets for seventy-nine against South Africa in 2011, he was 18 years old and 193 days old.
Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel were putting together a strong partnership for Pakistan until Rehan swung the edge firmly in England’s favour by taking the wickets of Azam (54), Mohammad Rizwan (7), and Shakeel (53) in a six-over stretch. This allowed England to take a commanding lead in the match.
As Pakistan’s second innings came to an end, he took the final two wickets of Mohammad Wasim and Agha Salman to finish with a five-for on his debut. As a result, England was given a target of 167 runs to chase after Pakistan was bowled out for 216.
Earlier, after making the decision to bat first, Pakistan had scored 304 runs in their first innings, with captain Babar Azam (78) and Agha Salman both scoring fifty runs (56). The best bowler for England was the spinner Jack Leach, who took four wickets for 140 runs.
The game was won by England by a score of 50 runs, and the opposing team was bowled out for 354 runs in their first innings.
Both Harry Brook (111) and Ben Foakes (64), both of the opposing team’s batsmen, had strong performances. The Pakistani bowlers Nauman Ali (4/126) and Abrar Ahmed (4/150) stood out for their respective teams.
Will Jacks had previously accomplished this milestone earlier in the series, but Rehan overtook him and became the 53rd England bowler to capture a five-wicket haul in their Test debut.
However, considering Rehan’s age, he was the youngest player to accomplish the feat in his Test debut. When Rehan was given a cap for the third Test of the series, he became the youngest player in England’s history to make his debut in a Test match.
In the beginning of this year, Ahmed excelled in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup as England’s second-highest wicket-taker. He took a total of 12 wickets over the course of four matches, averaging 12.58 wickets per game.
