On June 27, at Providence Stadium in Guyana, India will play England in the second Semi-Final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Ravindra Jadeja, an all-around player, has drawn criticism for his play.
With just 20 runs scored and one wicket taken in seven games, Jadeja’s efforts have been little despite India’s undefeated record in the competition. Sunil Gavaskar, a cricket icon, has defended Jadeja, downplaying criticism and highlighting the player’s total contribution to the squad.
The Men in Blue have emerged as a dominant squad during the main tournament, going undefeated and earning a position in the semi-finals. Although the team has performed brilliantly, there has been criticism of the individual efforts of important players like Virat Kohli and Jadeja.
Known for his versatility, Jadeja has not fared well in the tournament thus far, failing to leave a lasting impression with the bat or the ball. Gavaskar stated that he was confident in Jadeja’s skills and background.
“Given his experience, I am not worried in the slightest. He’s performed admirably for the opportunity he’s had. Remember that he picked up catches, runouts, and excellent fielding to save 20 to 30 runs in the actual game. So remember those 20–30+ run intervals. Then he takes the pitch, and everything he does with the bat and ball improves his skill set. Thus, in my opinion, we shouldn’t even consider questioning (Jadeja),” Gavaskar stated on Stars Sports.
Two bad games and you go, what to do with him: Sunil Gavaskar
The media and Indian supporters’ propensity to doubt players’ roles in the squad following a few subpar performances in a competition such as the World Cup was also criticised by the batting icon.
“Two poor games and you go, what to do with him, what to do with him?” is the issue with India and Indian supporters. That’s the worry, you know,” he continued.
The all-rounder, in the opinion of the seasoned opener, is among the team’s top players and a threat to the opponent on any given day.
“Nobody even considers their own professions, whether they have made two mistakes, or whether people are doubting their position in their own field, whichever it may be, when they ask these questions. You don’t challenge Jadeja’s position in the starting lineup; this is merely a great topic for television. “He is truly a rock star,” he declared.
