The Bangladesh batsmen saw no reprieve, despite the fact that India bowled in conditions that were far less favourable than on day one. When things eased off, Ravindra Jadeja broke Bangladesh’s greatest partnership, while Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Mohammed Siraj claimed eight wickets apiece when helping the pacers.
Bangladesh came out of the frying pan early on the second morning, taking four quick wickets to remove India from the game, but they were quickly caught in the crossfire of India’s unrelenting bowling assault, being bowled out in just 47.1 overs. India had a 227 advantage going into day two, but they opted to bat nonetheless, and by stumps on day two, they were leading by 308.
For Bangladesh, the day got off to a good start. Hasan Mahmud finished Bangladesh’s first five-for against India, Taskin Ahmed took three wickets with the second new ball far more skilfully than the first, and they allowed India to score just 37 runs throughout the whole of the day. But soon after, it was pointed out that their bowlers had made far too many mistakes on the opening day. After bowling testing spell after testing spell and drawing a mistake once every three deliveries, India’s fast bowlers were instantly on point, reducing Bangladesh to 40 for 5.

Bumrah started off regularly putting the ball away over the wicket to the left-hand openers, but he turned around for the final delivery of the first over. Shadman Islam left him, most likely because the five balls before it had all moved out of the path, but this one came back in to hit the top of the off. Both the umpire and the India captain miscalled a leg-before-bow call that Zakir Hasan survived, but Deep was too strong for both him and Mominul Haque.
Deep bowled a rather poor first over, right around the wicket, but he got the ball to seam in from a good length just outside off in his second over. Mominul had his pad in position, but the ball ricocheted into the wicket, leaving Zakir absolutely defeated. Without that, he would have been lbw. The hat-trick ball was edged by Mushfiqur Rahim towards the gully, but it missed.
After lunch, India returned to their two best bowlers, who had bowled brief stints prior to the break. Of the three, Siraj was the most accurate; he had previously missed out on Zakir’s wicket. Despite Najmul Hossain’s attempts to offset the movement by walking towards him, he was only able to make it to the second slip due to a wobble-seam ball that sailed away from him.

Mushfiqur was tested repeatedly by Bumrah until he bowled an uncommon delivery that swung after pitching. You cannot intentionally get that to happen, but occasionally the ball will begin to swing after passing the batter, usually when the seam is upright. Even before it passed Mushfiqur, who would have otherwise covered the angle, this one began to move. It took the edge, moved fast to the second slip, and at the last second started to veer away from KL Rahul. Rahul’s hands were soft, signalling that the catch was made as his upper body twisted with the ball.
Now that the movement had subsided, Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan combined for a brief stand of 51, highlighted by some superb drives. After that, despite receiving little support from the pitch, India’s spin twins came on and gave nothing away. Litton, in his attempt to dominate them, ended up hitting a much squarer slog-sweep than he would have preferred, giving deep square leg a catch.
Regretfully, Shakib lobbed Rishabh Pant after reverse-sweeping Ravindra Jadeja right into his boot.
India repeated the threat posed by Siraj and Bumrah right before teatime. Siraj quickly discovered the edge, but it was not enough to win. However, Bumrah defeated Mahmud with what turned out to be the final ball before tea. Bangladesh was still sixty-five short of escaping the continuation. Three quarters of an hour passed between the final two Bangladeshi wickets, including a boundary off Bumrah that obviously kicked something off. Bumrah used short balls to first soften Taskin Ahmed, striking him on the glove and helmet, then finishing him off with a precise yorker.
Though he didn’t particularly want to be in Bumrah’s way, the towering Nahid Rana was able to prevent him from earning the five-for and hit him for two boundaries. In the end, he got his second wicket by playing Siraj on while he laboured at one. On day two, India had more than an hour and a half to bat before stumps.
India started the game with great momentum, having a significant lead. They soon found that the ground was still too uneven to be playing around with the bowling, as Yashasvi Jaiswal scored ten runs off the first over and Rohit Sharma flicked the first ball he faced for four. They took the most wickets (16) in a single day’s play at Chepauk.

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill batted well after that, but a rare dismissal of a right-hand batsman, caught lbw by a forward offspinner, making it 17 wickets for the day. After Kohli did not review it, Ultra Edge recommended an inside edge. India led by more than 300 by stumps.
