Ravichandran Ashwin, a veteran spinner on Team India, was honest about the team’s lack of trophies over the past 10 years at ICC events leading up to the highly awaited 2023 ODI World Cup. Over the last 10 years, it’s no secret that the Men in Blue have had trouble in the knockout stages of ICC games.
The last time they won a title was in 2013, when they won the ICC Champions Trophy while their previous captain, MS Dhoni, was in charge. Since then, the team has been knocked out of the T20 World Cup three times (in 2014, 2016, and 2022), the ODI World Cup twice (in 2015 and 2019), the WTC finals twice (in 2021 and 2023), and the Champions Trophy once (in 2017).
Australia beat them in the final of the World Test Championship 2021–2023 at The Oval in London. This was their last loss at an ICC event.
Ravichandran Ashwin, a veteran spinner, said it was ‘ridiculous’ that the team hasn’t won a prize in almost a decade.
“Of course, everyone on social media will be talking about whether or not India can win an ICC prize. We’ve been asking, “Can India end the ICC Trophy drought?” for so many years now. If you ask me, this is ridiculous, Ravichandran Ashwin said on his YouTube account.
This time, India has a great chance: Ravichandran Ashwin Ashwin also said that Team India is usually the favourites, and that the next World Cup will be the same. He also said that every team in an ICC event has an equal chance of winning, and he repeated that the Men in Blue will “start” as the favourites in the big ICC event that will take place in October and November.
“The Indian team is strong. India has a great chance this time, except for a few things. In fact, we were strong favourites to win the 2019 World Cup. But at every ICC game, all teams have had the same chances. If you ask me, I’d say that any cricket game starts out 50/50. But India is the favourite to win the 2023 World Cup,” Ashwin added.
