Veteran all-rounder Ravi Ashwin has praised young Assamese batter Riyan Parag for his recent performances, calling him a remarkable talent in the domestic cricket field. People have taken notice of Parag’s incredible achievement of seven consecutive T20 half-centuries at the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. In the Ranji Trophy, he scored the second-fastest century in the tournament’s history with a stunning knock of 155 runs from 87 balls, which included 12 sixes.
His Indian Premier League (IPL) performances have drawn criticism despite his outstanding performances. Though Parag is still a young player, Ravi Ashwin refuted the doubters by highlighting his improvement. In 2016, Rishabh Pant set a record for the fastest century in the Ranji Trophy when he hit a century in just 48 balls against Jharkhand.
Ravi Ashwin support for the young cricket player highlights his potential and development.
“After only witnessing his IPL performances, Ryan Parag is often criticized as an overhyped cricket player. Sometimes we forget how young he is. He is still a young player but he is developing. Ravi Ashwin posted on his YouTube channel that Parag “made useful contributions in the Syed Mushtaq Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy and slammed 155 for Assam against Chattisgarh in the first match of the ongoing Ranji Trophy season.”
“With 87 balls, he scored 155. He didn’t play T20 cricket just for the fun of it. That’s what he was forced into. He played such a knock and took control of his own hands that all the hitters on the other end fell like flies,” he continued.
Lesser-known achievements during Riyan Parag’s IPL career
During his 54-match IPL career, the 22-year-old displayed his limited skills by scoring 600 runs at an average of 16.22 and recording two half-centuries. His best IPL score of 56 runs without a loss is evidence of his potential as a hitter.
The Assam batsman broke the joint record of 18 years and 169 days held by Prithvi Shaw and Sanju Samson to become the youngest player to reach an IPL fifty, at the tender age of 17 years and 175 days. Although he was released, the Rajasthan Royals showed their faith in him by securing his services once more at the 2022 Indian Premier League Auction.
