Afghanistan successfully pursues the aim to defeat Pakistan for the first time in history.
In the ODI World Cup 2023 match, Afghanistan shown tenacity and perseverance in chasing a target of 283 runs set by Pakistan. Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, the opening pair, gave a standout performance by putting together a stunning 130-run partnership for the first wicket. A remarkable run chase was made possible by both players’ half-centuries, which set the stage for victory. Ibrahim’s graceful drives and Gurbaz’s aggressive attitude kept the scoreboard moving.
Their rapid scoring rate—100 runs in just 15.3 overs—confused Pakistan’s bowlers. Shaheen Shah Afridi’s dismissal of Gurbaz in the 22nd over gave Pakistan their first wicket. Afghanistan, however, maintained its composure. Rahmat Shah and Hashmatullah Shahidi took over, establishing a 96-run third-wicket partnership that was unbroken.
The Pakistani bowlers struggled to make any breakthroughs as a result of their composed approach. Shahidi added a quick 48 not out while Rahmat hit an undefeated 77. Pakistan’s bowlers appeared inept during the chase and unable to get any help from the surface.
The Afghan batsmen took advantage of Pakistan’s subpar fielding and displayed outstanding running between the wickets. Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain, scored the game-winning runs with a pull-off Afridi to give Afghanistan a historic victory. With their best successful chase in ODIs, Afghanistan’s performance in this match was a key turning point.
