On October 11, 2024, the 90th edition of the Ranji Trophy, India’s top first-class cricket competition, would kick off under a new format intended to improve the game. In an effort to keep things fresh, this season features six teams in the Plate division and 32 teams in the Elite category.
There are four groups of eight teams each comprising 32 teams in the Elite category. Every team will play each other once inside their group, with the top two teams moving on to the quarterfinals. Six teams compete in a round-robin style in the Plate division, with the top four teams moving on to the knockout stages.
Under the new promotion and relegation system, the two Plate finalists will be promoted to the Elite division for the following season, while the two lowest-placing Elite teams from each group will be demoted to the Plate level.
Mumbai, the defending champions, will try to hold onto the championship. The quarterfinals get underway on February 8, 2025, after the group round concludes in early February of 2025. The summit match is scheduled on February 26. Semi-finals begin on February 17.
